Generalists book6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() I suspect that this is already often the case. Therefore, the implication of the book is that many people solving problems in EA would benefit from being generalists.("Golf, chess, classical-music performance, firefighting and anesthesiology are (in this sense) kind learning environments tennis and jazz are less kind emergency-room medicine, technological innovation and geopolitical forecasting are downright wicked - as is much of the rest of modern life.") It seems to me that many of the problems that effective altruists are tackling are in "wicked" environments, with delayed feedback, difficult to discern patterns.By contrast, generalists flourish in “wicked” learning environments, where patterns are harder to discern and feedback is delayed and/or inaccurate.') Reading this book helped me see the benefit of breadth for solving particularly "wicked" environments ('Specialists flourish in such “kind” learning environments, where patterns recur and feedback is quick and accurate. ![]() Summary of why this is a worthwhile read for people interested in EA: ![]()

Peter brannen ends of the world6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() There often are conflicting theories as to why events unfolded as they did even when similarities to our own time appears in the historical record, their explanatory power isn’t always clear. To be sure, historical lessons are always hard to parse. ![]() ![]() So if you’re wondering how bad it can get, Brannen argues that “the history of mass extinctions provides the answer.” And given the Trump administration’s decision to quit the Paris Climate Agreement and drastically reduce the Environmental Protection Agency’s regulatory power-well, this book is timely to say the least. The signs that humanity is flirting with its own extinction seem clear, whether our politicians admit it or not. As Brannen explains, life on earth has been almost extinguished five times over the course of our planet’s history, and he posits that the past can grant us a clearer understanding of our present situation. What does it take to kill the world? This is the main question environmental journalist Peter Brannen investigates in his new book, The Ends of the World: Volcanic Apocalypses, Lethal Oceans, and Our Quest to Understand Earth’s Past Mass Extinctions. ![]()

Joseph had a little over coat6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() Joseph's beloved but worn and patched overcoat gets recycled and reused over and over again, and by necessity of course becomes ever smaller and smaller (but still always purposeful), and finally ends its existence as a button. ![]() Based on a traditional Yiddish folksong (the lyrics and musical score of which are, in fact, featured on the last or rather the second to last page, much appreciated, although I would prefer to have both the English and the Yiddish lyrics included), Simms Taback's Joseph Had a Little Overcoat presents a totally and utterly magical marriage of text and image (I can more than well understand why and how this gem of a picture book was awarded the Caldecott Medal, as the illustrations are a true feast for the eyes, bright, lively, intensely descriptive and absolutely teeming with details and delightful fun). ![]()

Tunnel in the Sky by Robert A. Heinlein6/24/2023 ![]() Wells has written multiple books that are regarded as some of the best books in the genre. Now, I will be shifting the focus on a couple of authors that played an important part in the genre. If that doesn’t speak volume, I don’t know what else will. The novel is over two centuries old and is still relevant today. That has led to it being one of the most banned books in the country.Ī book that is often credited as being one of the first if not the first science fiction books is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The novel tackles a bunch of issues and uses science fiction perfectly to create the worst-case scenario to make the its point. There are many books on the list that are synonymous with the science fiction genre and the first one I will be talking about is The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. The list is in no specific order but what came to my mind first.
